Tzii 'Rotten Friendship', or should I say an evening contemplation on sound and image...

I don't think I have to explain the importance of visualizations for postindustrial music (the amount of synonyms used to describe the genre is sickening, I personally think of 'postindustrial' as the best) to the regulars at festivals and concerts of such music.
I suppose the same goes for the fans of experimental films who know all too well that the image would be dull if not accompanied by appropriate soundtrack.

The two examples of various fields show that the two means of artistic expression need each other to become complete. I hope they'll provoke the people – even those not directly involved - to start an independent research within the area.


Why do the Polish and Central-European labels (or rather netlabels which - in the era of the Internet and the tricks any chap knowledgeable of goodies Ableton Live offers may apply - spring up) tend to omit the image - an important element that complements the message?
Why not making the relationship with directors and DVJs closer instead of playing with boxes, wrapping it in ribbons and adding extra pins (editions limited to 93 copies of course)?
There's been quite a lot of music produced so far, I bet even in Poland there are several pieces that are being produced just now – Ladies and Gentlemen, let's draw the audience's attention by image, let's not leave anything to a coincidence.


V-ATAK is an audiovisual label centered round experimental artists and DVJs. The shows of their output might be watched in Europe (France, Belgium, Switzerlans, Spain). The artists of V-ATAK pool get prizes at important audiovisual art competitions and their productions are characterized by an incredible coordination between sound and image.

Recently I got a newest album by a French experimental project Tzi, entitled 'Rotten friendship'.
The album is a compilation of remixes of old pieces arranged in a noize and ritual ambient style.
Shortly speaking it featuresinteresting arrangements that make it hard to guess the original sound of Tzii, who usually make use of live instruments, which at the new album have been completely distorted.
The whole was released by both V-ATAK and Night On Earth Records – highly ascetic, packed in a hand-made envelope of enamelled paper.

The album goes with - or I should rather say – it's 'accompanied' by an extra DVD.
It includes videos by 10 artist directly connected with Tzii, e.g. Toff, Telemak, 1n0ut, Bruno Ribeiro. The videos do not form a conceptual entity. The themes are mostly about industrial, everyday race humans take part in, globalisation and consumption. We may also find two compositions by Tzii.
The videos make use of various montage techniques, so the viewer is in no danger of monotony, even after seeing several vids in a row.

After I'd seen the visualizations did I realize how much the Polish labels loose by trivializing the image.
But, I keep on picking on the labels whereas it's actually the artists who should look after making their music exceptional.

In the latest offering from Belgian label Night on Earth, the works of Tzii, one of the prime representatives of the label, are the basis for a dual CD-R/DVD-R release, coming in an intriguingly beautiful, handcrafted silkscreen packaging with a limited run of 300 copies. However, as is often the case with limited releases, the bar is set high for the content of the release to at least match the quality of the packaging.
Albeit the audio part of the set consists of work offered by other artists experimenting with the original Tzii material, straight from the tracklisting, one can notice that there is little repetition of individual source tracks, thankfully avoiding a frequent pitfall of many a remix album. Diving into the material proper, any fears of repetition quickly dissolve, as each remix has something new to offer, even when tackling the same original material, giving the perspective and interpretation of each of the contributing artists in a manner both distinct, yet retaining the tone of the original Tzii work.
Ranging from the menacingly dark drone and drums of "Swamp Ritual " to the more mysterious undertones and strings of "Go East", the record features a fair share of notable moments, with excellent fluctuations both in style and intensity. The remake of "I Killed Her" is one example of said fluctuations, offering a surprisingly catchy rhythmic revision of the original track, that would normally feel out of place in a typical dark ambient album, yet here serves as a reminder of the nature of this record's purpose to reinterpret and repurpose the source material into something different yet equally effective.
Thus, the entire record manages to offer a tight and balanced payload of dark electronics, with the right amount of "flavour" from the remixing artists to remain entertaining, evenn to those accustomed to such works. A perfect accompaniment for reading and contemplation, if not one prone to cause the listener to be drawn away in order to observe the tunes in display more carefully.
The DVD-R contains original material from Tzii, in the form of an aural basis for the unraveling of few short films. Here, there is more variation to the contributions, which unfortunately goes both ways. Some of the videos, while not bad in themselves, almost unavoidably fall into some of the dark genre cliches. The butchery material is here, along with its friend the gimmicky fake blood, into what sometimes feels like a reunion of the basic shock/splatter elements. Still, the strength of some of the video in display cannot be denied, and the reminiscence of the work of other notable video artists such as Cunningham is more than welcome.
In the end, the themes of the darkness within each of us, the solitude of being and the strength that it can provide, along with the wrongness said strength and dark energy can lead to, are imprinted to the viewer through the combination of video and audio, which, I guess, was the intent of the creators, and one overally well accomplished.
All in all, this release is an easy recommendation to anyone intrigued by finecrafted aural and visual displays of dark themes, be it an audience uninitiated to the original tracks, or one seeking something new yet (un)comfortably familiar.

Los amantes del dark-ambient estamos de enhorabuena pues lo que tenemos para ofreceros es algo que conseguirá enloqueceros de inmediato. No sólo me estoy refiriendo a un regalo para los oídos… sino también para la vista. V-Atak y Night on Earth se unen para ofrecernos lo mejor de su catálogo de artistas, cada uno en su especializad… Un auténtico 2×1. V-Atak es un sello fundado en 2002 dedicado al arte audio-visual y, en definitivas cuentas, a crear y producir vídeo-clips de calidad profesional. Por otro lado, Night On Earth es el sello propio de TZII (pieza fundamental de este albúm) que creó en 2001. Desde hace 10 años, este músico compositor y creador de vídeos ha distribuido sus frecuencias corrosivas mágicas a través de todo el mundo mediante tours desde el este y oeste de Europa hastaAustralia, pasando por USA, Canadá, Japón y África. También ha sido parte de numerosos proyectos, entre los cuales cabria destacar Solar Skeletons,Lifesteak, Cinemassaker, Transit, Hathor Kyriarhia y Paroxysm of Anxiety. Como compositor de vídeos destaca en las producciones realizadas para bandas como Parade Ground o Solar Skeletons, dirigiendo vídeo-clips para Mourmansk 150, HIV+, Solar Skeletons, Fujako y algún corto paraV-Atak y otros. Por último, resaltar su colaboración con músicos como Ripio, Gamaboy, Steve MacKay, Mike Watt, Marshall Allen, Sikhara, Rko,Hop-Frog, Jason Lafarge, Temple of Bonmatin, Sam Lohman, Alveols, Nevroz D´incise, Klstr, Najah, Koonda Holaa,Stalker, Otto von Schirash, Dj Urine, Error, Felakkkzion, Cochela, Pilami, Synoxys y 1997EV.

El trabajo que tenemos entre manos, como hemos dicho, está compuesto de un CD+DVD. Lo primero que nos llama la atención de esta edición es que encontramos trece tracks en el formato de CD audio, y diez en el de DVD vídeo, con tan sólo tres tracks en común y teniendo en cuenta que dos de éstos son remezclas distintas del mismo. Normalmente, en este tipo de material solemos encontrarnos con el mismo contenido tanto en el CD como en el DVD, sólo que al DVD se le añade la música a la parte del vídeo. Por otra parte, centrándonos primero en el CD de audio, encontraremos que todos los tracks son remezclas de temas originales deTZII a manos de otra gente o, como dice el título del álbum, “Rotten Friendship“, producto de la amistad cosechada durante años dentro del mundo de la música.

La música que podremos encontrar es de lo más variopinta, siempre dentro del género dominante del dark-ambient, pero en ocasiones con connotaciones bastante post-industriales. Cuando hablamos de tracks más dark-ambient, (ejemplo: ‘Teras Logos‘, ‘Solitude Cuivrée‘, ‘Go East‘, ‘Fascinum #2‘ ,’Le Pole‘, ‘Swamp Ritual #2..‘) nos referimos a música muy oscura, plagada de matices sonoros y, sobre todo, nada monótona. En ocasiones, algunos tracks van más allá del puro ambient, introduciendo elementos más de música tradicional, como instrumentos de cuerda, con referencias ocasionales incluso étnicas. Por otro lado, el resto de tracks (ejemplo: ‘Swamp Ritual #4‘, ‘Le Deuxiene Peau‘ ,’ I Killer Her‘, ‘Feeding your Back‘ y ‘Swamp Ritual #6‘ ) están más encaminados a una ambientación dark-ambient, con sonidos extraños que van englobando el ambiente, y elementos bastante marcados de post-industrial, incluyendo percusiones repetitivas y rituales, algunos sonidos máselectrónicos y el elemento del ruido y distorsión como arma primordial en la mayor parte de los casos, acercándose mucho a un sonido noise.

Como resumen de lo que he podido escuchar en el CD de audio, decir que es bastante satisfactorio. Una selección de temas bastantes recomendables que no se estancan en el típicodark-ambient aburrido gracias a la variedad de artistas involucrados.

Pero, sin embargo, la joya de este álbum es, sin ninguna duda, el apartado del DVD. Al igual que el CD de audio, éste ha sido realizado por varias gentes amigas de TZII, mientras que este último ha sido el encargado de realizar la música. Cada uno de los vídeos que podremos ver ha sido compuesto por un artista distinto. De esta manera, tenemos diez piezas únicas que representan la visión plural de diversos contenidos o ideas. Ya, para empezar, nos llama la atención, nada más introducir el DVD en el reproductor y pulsar el play, los créditos de presentación del trabajo…. Una pared blanca siendo recorrida por la cámara, mientras van apareciendo los textos introductorios. Una vez llegado al final de su camino, nos aparecerá el menú para seleccionar el vídeo que queremos reproducir. Elegimos uno (o reproducir todo)… y comenzará el espectáculo.

Hay dos tipos de vídeos que podemos distinguir entre lo que podemos ver. El primero es un tipo de vídeo acompañado de la música de TZII, basado en imágenes casuales buscadas de distintas fuentes para conseguir el efecto deseado. El otro tipo de vídeo tiene más aspecto de vídeo-clip típico. O sea, un trabajo de guión y estudio donde en ocasiones hay actores, donde ha habido una selección de lugares para rodar, etc … En resumidas cuentas, un vídeo-clip grabado con imágenes propias. Y es precisamente este último tipo el que más me ha gustado y más me ha llamado la atención, quizá porque, a mi modo de ver, es un poco más personal y distinto de lo que estamos acostumbrados a ver.

Una vez dicho esto, analizaremos un poco el contenido de cada uno de los vídeos. Empezamos con ‘Fuel Tank…‘, un vídeo impresionante, realizado por TOFF:, donde se nos muestra una serie de lugares oscuros, como ruinas o sitios ancestrales. La sincronía de la música y la ambientación conseguida es de lo mejor que he visto en mucho tiempo. Realmente, el vídeo consigue atraparte y llevarte dentro de las imágenes, y el no saber muy bien qué es lo que va a ocurrir incluso puede llegar a dar miedo, dejarte con la intriga y con el suspense en el cuerpo. Un primer vídeo que me dejó helado, con una calidad totalmente profesional… - Pero bueno, estas palabras serán muy recurridas en esta reseña -.

Continuamos con ‘Caresse Automatique‘, realizado por Telemak. En esta ocasión unas letras introductorias nos cuentan que el vídeo se basa en unos hechos que ocurrieron en Japón, en julio de 2007, donde un terremoto de 6.8 grados sobre la escala de Ritcher provocó cierta radioactividad detectada en todo el mundo, enKashiwazaki, al noroeste de la isla. El vídeo en su comienzo es mucho menos atractivo que el anterior. Se basa en imágenes en color sobre la ciudad nipona con gente andando por las calles, otras trabajando, el bullicio de los coches, carreteras… para, finalmente, tornarse todo a algo más gris, con imágenes en blanco y negro. En definitivas cuentas, un video bastante más flojo y menos impactante, que es salvado tan sólo por la música que le acompaña.

En la línea de calidad y acepción de ‘Fuel Tank‘, encontramos el tercer vídeo, llamado ‘La Deuxiéme Peau‘, a cargo de Bruno Ribeiro. Imágenes en blanco y negro con una música que parecer bailar constantemente con las imágenes gracias a su perfecta sincronía. Un hombre sentado en la oscuridad frente a un tomavistas, como viendo la TV, y desencadenándose a su alrededor una serie de sucesos extraños y juegos macabros. Interesante de principio a fin. Buena actuación del actor. Calidad impecable. Montaje perfecto.

Continuamos con ‘Mutations‘, un vídeo a cargo de Zu Label, compuesto por una serie de imágenes en movimiento que parecen no seguir una tónica lógica como los otros anteriores. Relojes, corazones palpitando, operaciones, circulación de fluidos y pruebas de laboratorio, todo acompañado por una música más frenética, salvaje y, por supuesto, post-industrial.

A continuación llega ‘Buckets of Blood‘, realizado por Pilami, donde asistiremos a una proyección un tanto angustiosa a la par que desagradable. Se trata de una serie rápida y asfixiante de varias secuencias distintas entremezcladas, tales como un hombre cortando con un coche la piel y carne de un animal (posiblemente un ternero, o similar, en un matadero), otras imágenes de un trozo de carne sanguinolento siendo comido por gusanos y, por ultimo, otra serie de imágenes consistentes en una persona corriendo, o huyendo, por una angosta cueva, oscura y tétrica, y unas imágenes de una antigua casa desaliñada y roída por el abandono, muy similar a la parte final de Blair Witch Proyect. Un vídeo bastante duro y no apto para estómagos sensibles.

Seguimos con ‘Death Mariachi‘, realizado por RKO. Imagina una gota de agua donde se reflejaran en ella varias secuencias de la vida cotidiana…. Pues básicamente esto es lo que refleja el vídeo. Imágenes contradictorias de la naturaleza en su estado más puro, frente a otras del paso del hombre por la misma y, sobre todo, de la industria. La parte final se torna bastante más siniestra cuando comenzamos a ver muñecos ahorcados y muertos como imitando ser personas reales.

El siguiente vídeo es ‘Humans‘, a manos del propio TZII. Éste es otro de los vídeos que tiene la firma de identidad de lo que más me ha gustado de toda la serie de vídeo-clips que he podido ver en este DVD. Imágenes en blanco y negro, secuencias oscuras y lentas que son acompañadas perfectamente por la danza tétrica de la música, con una calidad exquisita y que en el fondo retrata lo que dice el titulo de la canción… Humanos…

’Feeding your back‘ es un vídeo simple a la vez que impactante y, sobre todo, con una edición de post-producción bastante conseguida. Se trata de una serie de rostros de animales, que se van fusionando lentamente de unos a otros, con un fondo igualmente variable. El vídeo ha sido producido por 1N0Ut.

Cybunk ha sido el encargado de realizar el siguiente vídeo, ‘Somnolence Intime‘, que retrata a una joven que yace tumbada en una especie de bañera. Todo con un color muy blanquecino y puro. Las secuencias que podremos ver van intercalando escenas de la mujer completamente desnuda, con otras donde la mujer comienza a vomitar sustancias blancas y otras negras. Video bastante llamativo y perturbador.

La joya de los efectos especiales se la lleva el último vídeo, realizado por Patrice Mugnier, llamado ‘An Aftermath‘. El vídeo en sí es bastante corto, lo cual es una lástima, pero me ha dejado sin palabras, impresionado de lo que he podido ver y, sobre todo, al comprobar cómo a día de hoy la infografía ya no está sólo al alcance de unos pocos.

Lo que está claro es que estamos llegando a un punto donde ya no se puede hablar de trabajos amateur, pues lo que tenemos entre manos es una selección de vídeos totalmente profesionales que no pueden envidiar, para nada, por calidad de imagen y por tratamiento de edición, a otros vídeo-clips de grupos más comerciales. Hace tres o cuatro años veía vídeos de grupos similares en redes como youtube, o incluso en revistas que venían acompañadas de CD/DVD con material multimedia y que dejaban bastante que desear, aunque siempre el esfuerzo y las ganas de hacer cosas son respetables y elogiables. Sin embargo, parece ser que una nueva era está comenzando y despertando para los amantes de la música más underground, sobre todo, después de comprobar el talento y la calidad de trabajos de gente como los que hemos comentado en esta reseña, y también, por ejemplo, el reciente trabajo CD+DVD de los chicos de Gradual Hate y Silence in First Degree.

Todo se podría resumir en una palabra: alucinante. Hay vídeos que me han gustado más que otros, igual que los temas, pero en conjunto, la sensación que se te queda en el cuerpo es de satisfacción plena tras haber visualizado un trabajo realizado por una serie de personas de manera totalmente profesional. Trabajo totalmente recomendado, incluso para aquellos para los que el dark-ambient no tiene ningún sentido, pues aquí, finalmente, terminarán encontrándolo.

I have been studying visual arts in different places for almost eight years now. Through three different institutes  I have met different students and lecturers who want to dedicate their lives to art, discussing it in an intellectual (on different levels) basis, and always trying to find the newest, freshest, and sometimes the most extreme forms of art that were performed. What I have always failed to understand is why many, far too many of them do not usually treat music, or sound, with the same tools they treat anything visual works, considering music as a mere form of entertainment, and not only that, an entertainment that is meant only to be pleasant, and never to challenge. Some of them would actually prefer to talk about the artistic trashiness that is in singers such as Britney Spears than the ideas behind other serious parallels to the artistic world, such as Musique Concrete, for example.

Among the few reasons for this problem is the following cause: Unlike a painting or a sculpture, music is forcing the listener to stay attentive for a certain time that is "Decided" by the artist and not by the listener. While I can choose to look at a painting for 3 seconds or for two hours, in order to fully percieve a three minutes long song I must be there for three minutes, which in my opinion is the thing that make many people leave the more complicated music alone and stick with the radio. To be challenged by an idea behind a painting is one thing, to be attacked by a relentless sonic assault for eight minutes is something else entirely. This is why it is great to come across a release like TZII's "Rotten Friendship", which puts together sound and picture, making a much wider approach to the audience. Will it work on the people that I have described ? I am not sure. But for the Dj/Producer/Musician TZII this is a great chance to both work with many interesting people and create an impressive audio/video statement nevertheless.

Lying inside a pretty paper cover showing different teeth, "Rotten Friendship" holds both a CDr pro and a DVD with a total sum of 23 tracks. The audio part consists of thirteen tracks by TZII, remixed by various artists, while the DVD holds ten videos, with music, of course, of different artists. The album, although DIY, looks great and sounds intense, with each act pulling the original TZII track into a different direction, with the general dark aura attached.  " Teras Logos" opens with a mysterious gesture that will stay dominant throughout most of the album. A semi oriental aura of mysticism and mystery , which sometimes turn into an almost inaudible ghost, while on other tracks it may be the most dominant actor.  The oriental strings, such as the ones "Go East", which sounds dreamy, and even haunted, are an addition that makes the atmosphere that these people are building up to be denser and denser. Voices are being heard from undisclosed direction alongside percussion and electronica, to the result of a very potent mixture of musical spices which can sometimes burn the mouth (or ear, in our case), yet at the same time stay pretty minimal. "Swamp Ritual" is more ritualistc, rhythmic and monumental, and this direction is being continued by others as well on the next tracks.  The overall taste of the music is very shamanistic and goes well with the teeth on the cover, as if some rare voodoo like ceremony is being held.

By the time " La Deuxieme Peau" is playing, the rhythm has become a little more eccentric and less coherent, and the music itself is being taken to more experimental and through "Feeding yout back" you can hear some sinister voices and distant sounds that are pretty disturbing to listen to. Perhaps it is the fact that each track was remixed by a different artist, perhaps the original tracks are to be praised and maybe it is the joint effort, but as the album ends you can realize the hard and proficient work that was put in order to achieve these results. But this is not all, because as the last seconds of the album come to an end, you can always go to your DVD or Computer and put the DVD in, see what these people have in store for you there.

The ten videos, all great in quality and ideas, shows different stories and images, from deep forests to documented earthquakes, as well as directed Video art clips and horrific footages of dissected meat or doll parts installations. The question if a video of a naked girl vomiting white liquids which turns to black (OH YES! WHERE DO WE GET THIS ALBUM!? )  or any other video from this collection for that matter, can really stand alone as a video art in front of people who did not come all this way for the music, is a question that shoud be asked and I have no answer for it. But with no doubt, those videos give a new dimension and expand the grasp over each of the ten tracks, with their visuals, which are interesting at least and beautiful at best.  

A beautiful release both in the visual aspect and in its music contents, Tzii's friendships might be rotten like the teeth shown on the album, but they are nevertheless rewarding in each and every way. A great album!
