PLANET MU

Mike Paradinas’ Planet Mu imprint was born in 1998, at the height of the electronic music gold rush that saw anybody with a synth and a drum machine fancying themselves as the next Aphex Twin. Rather than adding to that era’s avalanche of sub-Autechre noodling, however, Paradinas took the high road with Planet Mu, sporadically releasing music from the cream of the electronic crop. Artists such as Capitol K, Jega, Leafcutter John, Luke Vibert and, of course, Paradinas himself, in his Kid Spatula, Tusken Raiders and Mu-Ziq guises. Alongside Skam and Warp, Planet Mu became a beacon of quality in an oversubscribed scene. The last couple of years, however, have seen Paradinas guide his label in a somewhat different direction, steadily moving Planet Mu away from the hardcore electronica that made its name and towards a more (for want of a better word) urban sound, with drum’n’bass and dubstep now key elements in the imprint’s DNA.

LUKE VIBERT

Luke Vibert is a Cornish recording artist and producer known for his work in many subgenres of electronica. Vibert has recorded under several different aliases, most notably Plug and Wagon Christ.
Vibert originally became involved in electronic music through his interest for hip-hop as well as the environment of bedroom experimentalism associated with the swelling late-'80s U.K. dance scene. He released an album through the Rephlex label under the name of Vibert/Simmonds which caught the ear of Caspar Pound's Rising High music label. As a result of the popularity of the style in the early 90's, the label commissioned an ambient music album from Vibert, who delivered the well-received Phat Lab Nightmare under the alias Wagon Christ in 1993. The later releases varied in style as he released albums under various aliases, including Plug, Amen Andrews, Kerrier District and Spac Hand Luke.

VEX'D

Vex'd are Jamie and Roly from London. Since putting out their first two releases on the Subtext imprint, Vex’d have gone from strength-to-strength, releasing their 2005 debut long player Degenerate on Mike Paradinas’ Planet Mu. The groundbreaking album instantly propelled the duo into the electronic music hall of fame - receiving plaudits from music journalists and radio Djs, winning over fans worldwide and setting the standard for quality electronics. Vex’d are currently wrecking heads and feet at clubs up and down the country, appealing to the disparate factions of drum and bass, breaks, dubstep and ambient with their signature sound, as futuristic as it comes and representing the next generation in forward thinking dubstep.

Boxcutter

Pretty much the sole torch-carrier for the Northern Irish dubstep scene, Barry Lynn (aka Boxcutter) makes the kind of lead-heavy missives which share the cross-over appeal of Burial or VEX'D, whilst keeping a foot firmly in the more electronically-founded margins of the genre.
Lynn is yet another member of the ever-swelling dubstep scene who is willing (and able) to introduce a broader palate of sounds, ensuring the genre continues to flourish and, most crucially, avoid the stagnation so prevalent in anything that gets tagged 'underground'.

(dj) Distance

DJ Distance's musical path is atypical of many dubsteppers. He began as a metal fan before falling under the spell of UK garage. His early productions took breakstep into twisted, psychotropic realms. Two years ago, he switched his drum programming style and dubstep don DJ Hatcha took a strong interest. This is the context in which he issues his debut album, My Demons, yet the past leaves a strong impression on the present.
