Connexion Bizarre - updates thread 2009 « Réponse #46 le: octobre 15, 2009, 02:05:20 am »
Connexion Bizarre was updated on October 12 th with new content (webcasts, links and a competition of sorts).

A quick overview of this week's update:
Webcast: "Dark Night of the Soul" with music selection by Machinochrist and "untitled migraine relief" with music selection by M.

As mentioned before, we have also set up a http://www.connexionbizarre.net/donations.htm - donations page. While Connexion Bizarre may be hosted for free and run by volunteers but it does have its costs (postal expenses come to mind). If you appreciate the work we are doing or find it useful in some manner, please consider a http://www.connexionbizarre.net/donations.htm - donation or perhaps a quick trip to our http://www.connexionbizarre.net/store.htm"]store.

Best regards,
Miguel

("Submission for Radio Futura" with music selection by M.)
This was the 'mixtape' that was submited to and accepted by http://www.radiozero.pt/ - Radio Zero for a participation in the Radio Futura initiative (the 'official' radio of the 2009 edition of http://futureplaces.org/ - Future Places digital media and online culture festival/meeting). The actual live radio broacast took place on October 17th between 6-7pm but, for those that missed it, here's the original submission, without any spoken comments.
Unfortunately, the exact tracklisting was never noted down (lame) and there's a couple of pieces that I can't identify anymore. Either way, this mix is bound to contain tracks by one or more of the following: Marching Dynamics, Hecq, Lucidstatic, Otto Von Schirach, Igorrr, Sickboy, Zeller, Faux Pride, Drumcorps, Glowstyx, Enduser, Le Diktat, Ten Data Keshin, Az-Rotator and a couple of others which I don't remember at the moment. If by any chance you think you can identify all the pieces in this mix, mail your tracklisting to mailto:info@connexionbizarre.net"]info@connexionbizarre.net and we'll publish it if it is correct giving you credit (wow!).

Reviews

Fhievel - Pipe Smoking on a Balloon
A variety of electronic drones, warm crackling noise and many other subtle electronic noises. "Pipe Smoking on a Balloon"album maintains a sense of calm and never strays into harshness or anything that doesn't make you feel like you're floating along with the clouds (perhaps in a balloon with a pipe in hand?). That's not to say it grows boring either though.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_fhievel_psoab.htm

Sunao Inami - Disinfectant
Japanese experimental artist and Electr-Ohm label head Sunao Inami releases "Disinfectant", his seventh album under his own name.  The album is composed of tracks recorded live in Tokyo in May 2009 which have been cut up and remixed with the intention of to creating new material whilst maintaining the live feel inherent in the original tracks.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_sunaoinami_d2.htm

Y.E.R.M.O. - Collision Zone
Once you've put this CD into your player, you may find that you can't stop listening to it again and again in order to fully appreciate all of its details and subtleties. And for that reason, it should better be played at high volume, on a high end stereo and with lights turned off.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_yermo_cz.htm

[syndika:zero] - Blindness
'True Industrial Freedom' is a term bandied about by this relatively new act on the scene to describe their contribution to industrial and harsh electro music. A loftier ideal, perhaps, than club popularity, but their latest release, "Blindness", is more likely to be remembered for the latter than the former.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews/r_syndikazero_b.htm

V/A - Whiteline Vol. III
Roughly once a year, the German label has released an installment of "Whiteline", their DJ-oriented 12" vinyl compilation series. Like its predecessors, "Whiteline Vol. III" features a selection of tracks by established acts and lesser-known or new and upcoming artists from several points in the world. This time around, Aentitainment presents tracks by Igorrr, Mobthrow, Ebola, Larvae and Hello.JPG.

Reviews

Defrag - Lament/Element
"Lament/Element" is a perfect chaos of mood and mode of expression, ranging from dnb to glitch/experimental to ambient orchestral grandeur - an album which is a must have for fans of intelligent electronics. This will be a return selection in my collection showing wear and tear of multiple repeat cycles in my stereo.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews.htm

dISHARMONY - Evolution
It may not feature the next big dancefloor filler, but an older, wiser audience cannot fail to sit up and take notice. Taken as individual tracks, or in its entirety, dISHARMONY have, indeed, evolved on this album, taking their compositions one step further towards enlightenment than many of their contemporaries would dare to.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews.htm

Gerostenkorp - Terre Brûlée
More IDM than experimental per se, but there's still nearly as much attention given to the process as the result, making for a well-balanced (if unclassifiable) album that will resonate equally well with fans of either.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews.htm

Aere Aeternus - Humanity Needs No Funeral
This is not to say that Aere Aeternus aren't honest about the message they are trying to convey. Perhaps they should consider re-evaluating their aesthetics and their discourse to avoid the clichés mentioned above or, perhaps (and quite difficult), reformulate them into something more convincing.

Reviews
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews.htm

Thermometerometer - Who Measures The Measurers?
Well, there's noise, there's experimental and then there's... Thermometerometer. Flips, clicks, drones, buzzes, pops and even glitches are thrown together and have things done to them that they could never have imagined in their wildest nightmares on "Who measures the measurers?", the first release from the Immigrant Breast Nest label.

Torrent Vaccine - Tentative Response
This is an impressive debut album. As noted before, it sounds very different to just about everything else (and just try comparing it to Torrent Vaccine's labelmates on BitRiot), and this certainly makes for an ear-catching release. It's not perfect, though, but a second album should help to smooth off those ragged bits (particularly the second half that sags a little) and is keenly awaited. Recommended.

Transistor6 - Virgin Venom
Well-produced and not particularly demanding, "Virgin Venom" has all that it needs to have broad appeal to a relatively wide audience of casual listeners. Ironically, these are precisely the kind of people who will not easily come across the work of Transistor6. A shame, really.

Violence and the Sacred performing as Viosac - You Are Planning To Enjoy The Apocalypse
Put a bunch of aging Throbbing Gristle fans in a room with stacks of analog equipment. Lock the door and come back a couple of decades later and you may discover something quite startling: instead of the decomposed remains of a creative collaboration, you will instead be faced with the newly-energised and thoroughly interesting experimental music project that is Violence and the Sacred, or Viosac.

Talbot & Deru - Genus
Philip Glass and Steve Reich aren't composers I ever expected to be brought to mind by an Ant-Zen release, but this is just what happened on hearing "Genus", a joint release between Ant-Zen and Dear Oh Dear Records, the label of British composer John (Joby) Talbot, working here with American electronica artist Deru (Benjamin Wynn). Their collaboration is the soundtrack to a dance work based on Darwin's discovery of evolution.

Interview

Dave Leach - Vendetta Music
The Denver-based Vendetta Music has been active as a music label since the mid-2000s and, since its inception, has accumulated a significant back-catalog of releases. It is home to a solid roster of artists from the field of dark electronics - from established acts like Xotox, Nachtmar, and W.A.S.T.E. to lesser-known ones like Necrotek, Mono-Amine and The Peoples Republic Of Europe. In addition to the label activity, Vendetta Music is also involved in the organization of music events, of which the most recent was the Vendetta Music Festival in September 2009.

Reviews

Cullen Miller - Stolen Nature
Detroit/San Francisco sound designer Cullen Miller really has his head screwed on. You get the impression that he's never even heard of IDM when you filter through the press release surrounding this album, but that's what you get from the opening number which, as with all the other tracks, is 'untitled'. Subtle tones and instrumentation are dragged along with almost dub-like bass and are lifted with organic elements such as acoustic guitar, a gentle warm opening to an album that is immediately engaging.

Release

Phllox - h[a]unted
h[A]unted is not easy to categorize, some say dark ambient, industrial, electro and others... describe this release as a soundscape for the listeners to play with emotions and nostalgia. From anger to sadness, from happiness to furiousness, compositions took place at various occasions along 2009.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/interviews.htm

Reviews

RMSonce - Reflections
As far as drones and experimental electronics are concerned, Francesc Martí excels. "Reflections" is this Barcelona artist's third release under the moniker RMSonce. Rather than being an indulgent drowning in monotonous layers of analogue drones and abstract, sampled noise, the nine-track album keeps us guessing. Generally accessible, short-format compositions make "Reflections" a good choice for the inquisitive, but perhaps too concise for the connoisseur in pursuit of detached, infinite spaces.

Interview

M.M. - Zhelezobeton
Zhelezobeton is a label and distributor of all sorts of experimental, noise, industrial and other not so conventional music. We release in small editions the music of our friends and distribute the releases of other labels which are more or less spiritually close to us. We have two sub-labels: Zhelezobeton Film for releasing video materials and Muzyka Voln for releasing music in more definite ambient/drone direction.

Reviews

The Bureau Of Nonstandards - The Bureau Of Nonstandards
The Bureau of Nonstandards decided to present the performances without any further processing and even though this decision brings a nice charm to the the album it might scare off a lot of listeners who are used to more polished productions. Those who take the album for what it is will certainly enjoy the sound adventures and realize that the Bureau of Nonstandards's approach to music is quite nonstandard indeed.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews.htm

Wentworth Kersey - O
The first in a planned trilogy of EPs, "O" and its successor, "(O)" (2009), are replete with much of the same: mournful, shimmering modulations, acoustic guitar and plaintive voice, all bundled together with lo-fi simplicity and a healthy measure of the open range to boot.

Reviews

Zilverhill - Latent-Active-Descent
This is only a limited release, which is a real shame, as it deserves a wide audience. The arrangements breathe and the elements shimmer in a way that shows that real craftsmanship and attention to detail have gone into what is one of the most satisfying albums of the year. There is nothing revolutionary or dramatically innovative about any of the elements here, yet they cohere into something that often feels fresh and instantly memorable, leaving lasting traces and compelling and rewarding repeat listening.
http://www.connexionbizarre.net/reviews.htm

Geneviéve Pasquier - Le Cabaret Moi
Though it has its failings and in some aspects it may not sound particularly fresh, "Le Cabaret Moi" is nevertheless a relatively solid offering by Geneviéve Pasquier which could have benefited greatly from a couple of different production and aesthetic choices. Not an album to listen regularly but certainly one to go back to on occasion and rediscover the odd forgotten track.

V/A - Kod.eX Compilation
In a nutshell, the "Kod.eX Compilation" is an amazing compilation that successfully manages to integrate a variety of seemingly unrelated styles into a coherent whole with nearly flawless flow, testimony of the talent and skill of those involved in the Kod.eX nights, from the organizers to the artists who performed there. Definitely a must for anyone interested in good music.

Mono-Amine - Like A Machine
"Like a Machine" is as solid as a power noise record can get, with an exemplary balance of variety in sound and focus in strength.
